Friday Five 6.28.19

We live in a world with a 24 hour news cycle with so many news resources that a few years ago I had to put myself on a media diet and limit the amount of news I consume every day because I found myself very overwhelmed with all the news out there. So each day I have 5 must-read resources that give me a well rounded idea of what is happening in the world, and I decided to share them with you in today’s Friday Five.

  1. My first go-to every morning are the Top Stories from The New York Times, or if I’m running short on time, I listen to The Daily, a New York Times podcast available on iTunes. I’ve been a NYT subscriber ever since they went to the paid model, and it’s $ I happily fork over each month for a family subscription.

  2. Hitha Palepu: One of my favorite entrepreneurs and Instagram influencers Hitha Palepu publishes #5SmartReads in her Instagram Stories each weekday, and then also posts them in her Facebook Group. The stories are varied and range from healthcare to literature to entrepreneurship and everything in between. And they really are smart reads.

  3. The Hustle: This newsletter on business and technology shows up in my mailbox each day - it’s a quick, informative, interesting read that helps keep me current on topics at the intersection of technology and business.

  4. Flipboard: I have my Flipboard set up to feed me stories that really interest me, but I also enjoy their Daily Edition section which features top news stories and the 10 For Today feature that curates 10 interesting stories from across the world.

  5. mindbodygreen: You may have noticed both here and on Instagram that I have an increasing interest in wellness, and mindbodygreen is one of my go-to resources for what’s new and interesting in the world of wellness and fitness.

June 29th: 2019 Waterloo Arts Fest. Music, arts and food come together in a vibrant festival in one of Cleveland’s coolest communities.

July 7th: Cleveland Color Run! Nick and I are signed up on a team with our friends Joe and Laura! You are more that welcome to join us - it will get you a small discount. Our team name is Adopt A Shelter Pet - we are walking/jogging a little through this 5k course, so don’t worry about training for this. We are not runners. This family friendly event is part of the All-Star weekend celebration so come have some fun!

July 10th: Asiatown Food Tour. This monthly event takes you on a tasting tour around Cleveland’s Asiatown. Didn’t know Cleveland had one? This tour is a great introduction.

July 11th-14th: Cleveland Tall Ships. Nick and I went to this the last time it happened and it was so much fun! This is a super fun event for families.

July 13th: Tequila Fest. Live music, taco eating contests, and world class tequila. I can’t think of better reasons to attend this event.

July 14th: Yoga + Beer at Platform Beer My friend Alicia is an amazing yoga instructor (see her event in June) and she’s hosting a series of yoga events to benefit The Arthritis Foundation of Ohio. Each event includes a 60 minute yoga class and a free beer. Cheers!

July 27th: CPL150 Street Festival! I’m a huge patron of the Cleveland Public Library, which is one of the top 2 libraries in the country (the other is the New York Public Library). This year the Cleveland Public Library celebrates 150 years with a huge celebration at it’s downtown branch. A must see if you love books, arts, puppets and everything in between.

I will update this list each week in the summer. ENJOY!
