Friday Five 9.13.19

I’ve reached podcast nirvana - I’m fully caught up on all my podcast episodes on all the shows I listen to! I received some new podcast recommendations this week and I’m sharing them in today’s Friday Five! The links below are for Apple podcasts, but you can also find these wherever you currently get your podcasts.

  1. The Killing of Marilyn Monroe: Marilyn Monroe was the most interesting woman of her time, who died suddenly in a “probable suicide”. However conspiracy theories have always surrounded her death, and many believe she was murdered by powerful politicians or the mafia. This 12-part podcast investigates her life, her romances, and presents theories on her untimely death. I just started this one and I’m hooked!

  2. The Daily Show with Trevor Noah Ears Edition: I love Trevor Noah and The Daily Show but I never get around to watching it. This is the next best thing.

  3. Today, Explained: I love catching up on the news while I’m walking the dogs each morning - it’s the ultimate multitasking - exercise + education. I’ve always enjoyed Vox’s in-depth analysis, and this podcast is no exception.

  4. Pivot with Kara Swisher and Scott Galloway: If you’re curious about what’s new in the world of tech and business and it’s intersection with politics, this podcast is for you. In a recent episode Kara and Scott (along with a guest) discussed all the drama around Uber and its prospects as a public company, and what it means for WeWork’s IPO. Super interesting if you’re curious about how tech companies are valued and the equity markets in general.

  5. Noble Blood: I learned about this one on another podcast, and as a slight history nerd, i’m fascinated by the premise - this podcast explores history’s most fascinating royals from a gruesome point of view. Who was murdered? Who committed murder? And everything in between.

Happy Listening! If you have a podcast recommendation, let me know in the comments!! And keep scrolling if you’re in Cleveland (or visiting) for some fun events coming up in September and October!

Fun things to do in Cleveland:

September 14th: 10th Annual India Festival USA. I am so excited for this event, which is largest Indian cultural festival in Ohio!

September 14th: Rocky River Fall Arts Festival This is always a great shopping festival with a group of fabulous vendors as well as the stores on Old Detroit Road.

September 14th- 15th: Chalk Festival 2019. This family friendly event mixes professional artists with ordinary people and you can even create your very own chalk art!

September 20th: F*Show XI If you’re in the market for contemporary furniture or what to source some great talent, this is the furniture show for you. I’ve been to this event several times in it’s history and the work is truly beautiful.

September 21st: CAN celebrates Women in the Arts. This is a ticketed event in super cool venue, supporting women in the arts, specifically Jennifer Coleman, the George Gund Foundation Senior Program Officer for the Arts and Kristen Cliffel, artist and recipient of the Cleveland Arts Prize Mid-Career Prize in Visual Art.

September 25th: Women’s Leadership Conference of Northeast Ohio I attended this event last year and it was an inspiring, educational day! This year’s event has an impressive, diverse set of speakers - if you have the time, I highly recommend attending.

September 27th: Night Market is back! This festival is always a blast, and features so much good food!

September 28th: Tremont Arts & Cultural Festival. It’s been several years since I’ve been to this event, mainly because there are so many competing arts festivals that feature similar artists. But I remember this having a really solid lineup of artists and vendors, so I’m going to try and check it out this year. If you’re not familiar with Tremont, this is a must-do, and then hang out after and walk around to check out some of the neighborhood restaurants and bars.

September 29th: Ohio City Street Festival This is another fun neighborhood festival featuring neighborhood restaurants, games for kids, ice-cream, and general end of summer fun!

October 5th: Ciao! Cleveland. This inaugural day-long festival will feature a wine tastings, cooking demonstrations, fashion, art, alcohol, coffee, music and of course FOOD! This event kicks off Italian Heritage Month around the Country!

October 6th: International Cleveland Community Day at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Celebrate all the communities that make up Cleveland with music, dance performances, art activities and in-gallery experiences. The day will also include a Naturalization Ceremony to welcome new U.S. citizens (it’s a beautiful ceremony if you’ve never witnessed one) and a line-up of short films from the New York International Children's Film Festival.

October 14th: CIFF Comedy Short Films at JukeBox! The next CIFF isn’t until March/April 2020, but this event gives you just a little taste of one of my favorite parts of the festival - enjoy some laughs with some drinks and pierogies!

I will update this list each week. ENJOY!
