Derby Day

I’m amazing by how inspiration can come together in the most unexpected ways. A few weeks ago, I put pink, orange and red flowers together as I was taking pictures of our Capsule FOUR earrings. I was struck by the unexpected beauty of so many bright colors together. It turned out to make a pretty compelling picture, if I might say so myself!

I didn’t think too much more about it until I had to put together my derby outfit. I’ve been on a cleaning spree lately, and one of the things I had put into a donation bin was a red straw hat. I also recently received a gorgeous orange dress in my Rent The Runway Update and an idea started to take place. I’m a terrible DIY’er but I figured I could make something work for ONE night, and I headed out to grab some faux flowers. I ended up finding some on sale at Kohl’s for $8, and a hot glue gun and only one minor burn later, my Derby hat was ready.

Our Derby plans took us to TENK West Bank which is a great blank-space warehouse space in downtown Cleveland. Our Derby Party was a benefit for Boys Hope Girls Hope, a non profit in Northeast Ohio that helps kids from under-resouced communities by providing them with support to take them from middle school all the way to their post-college career. A really great cause, and I’m told that this event typically raises in excess of $75,000 for the kids in the program.

My hat was a DIY, dress is Peridot Dress by Fame & Partners via Rent the Runway , Nick’s pants are Volcom , his vest and jacket are thrifted, and his bowtie and pocket square are Goodfellow & Co by Target.

Love my friend Charity’s dress and vintage hat! Her company Studio Chartreuse was one of the sponsors for the event.

We had a great time, but unfortunately my hat didn’t make it. By the end of the event the “carefully” stuck floral arrangement came completely undone, at which I point I abandoned the hat in the prop pile at the photo booth.

There’s a lesson to be learned here, and it’s that I’m pretty crap with a glue gun.

Cheers to great week!!
