Friday Five 2.1.19

Happy Polar Vortex week. I’ve spent most of the week indoors trying to stay warm, as I’m sure has been the case for pretty much most of the northern part of the country. Needless to say, there’s been a lot of reading, watching and listening this week, not so much doing.

Has celery juice taken over your Instagram feed and recent conversations? It feels like celery hired kale’s PR person, and celery juice is absolutely EVERYWHERE. And there’s not a chance in hell that I’m going to try it. I like celery in small quantities but the thought of drinking straight up celery juice makes me want to barf. That said, the health claims (largely anecdotal) of the juice are pretty compelling, and I started to wonder if I was missing something big. Turns out, not so much. At the end of the day, celery juice can’t hurt, but if you’re not into it, don’t worry too much. Thanks to my friend Lisa for sharing this piece by James Beard award-winning dietician and PhD Carolyn Williams. The Verdict on Celery Juice. And if you’re really interested, here’s more on the science behind the celery juice trend.

Going to dinner at an Indian restaurant? Don’t make these mistakes.

Look, if you follow me on Instagram then you know I absolutely LOVE being a Leo. I strongly identify with my sun sign and I’m not remotely embarrassed by it. If you’re similarly super into astrology, or merely interested or entertained by it, Spotify has horoscope playlists for every zodiac sign.

If you’re interested in history, I’d also like to recommend Fall of The Shah - a new podcast by BBC World Service. You may not know this, but back in the 1970s, the United States and Iran were allies. The Iranian Revolution would change the world forever, and this nine-part podcast is a dramatization of the events that led to the fall of the Iranian royal family.

I signed up for my first yoga retreat this week. It’s a one-day yoga retreat in Vermillion, Ohio, led by the team at 3 Sisters Yoga. And then my friend Kimberly introduced me to the account on Instagram and now I can’t stop thinking about super fancy yoga and wine retreats. Perhaps its time to kick my 2019 vision board to the next level?

Hope you have a wonderful weekend! It’s going to be a lot warmer after this Polar Vortex week so I hope you get out and enjoy yourself!

If you have recommendations of things for me to check out, email me at or DM me on Instagram with your suggestions, and I might just feature them and you in a future Friday Five!
