Friday Five 6.14.2019

If you watched my Instagram Stories this past weekend, then you know that Nick and I spent the entire weekend at LaureLive. This was our second consecutive year at the event, and honestly, it’s one of my favorite things to do in the summer. Grab a folding chair, some drinks and listen to amazing artists while sitting in the grass - what could be better?

Unlike last year, this year I really didn’t spend any time listening to the new-to-me bands before the festival, so I was very pleasantly surprised and excited to discover some new acts, which I’m sharing in today’s Friday Five

Alec Benjamin is 25, but he looks very young. Like teen young. And he has adorkable weirdness to match. He was so funny and entertaining, and his music is so much fun. You’ve probably heard his song Let Me Down Slowly on the radio or any of the Spotify top charts.

Rodrigo Y Gabriela are an incredible guitar duo from Mexico City who play an entirely instrumental set. Now before you go “meh, instrumental” take a listen to their music - it is so fun and upbeat, and is incidentally also the perfect music for a busy workday when you’re trying to get a lot of stuff done.

Misterwives is an indie pop band from New York City - very fun, pop music to dance to, and their shows are very bright and colorful

Castecomer is comprised of 5 cousins from Australia and they were my absolute favorite performance, mainly because they are hilarious! Their instagram bio says “We write big songs. We play fun shows” and they are not lying. Incidentally, they will be at The Beachland Ballroom in Cleveland on November 9th touring with RIPE, so get your tickets and don’t miss this band.

Coin is another indie pop band, but they’re from Nashville. They didn’t initially sound familiar but turns out I had listened to several of their songs on Spotify in various playlists. They’re part of the the Fitz and the Tantrums + Young The Giant Tour bill, playing at Nautica (Cleveland) on June 30th. Tickets are still available at LiveNation.

BONUS: To be completely honest, our main draw for the tickets was Trombone Shorty, and as usual, he was amazing. Such a FUN performance. If you have a chance to see him, don’t miss it. It will leave you completely energized, feeling that high vibe energy for the rest of the day, if not the whole week!

If you’re bummed you missed LaureLive, the WonderBus Music and Arts Festival is coming to Columbus, Ohio this summer and a number of LaureLive bands (including ones I mentioned in this post) will be performing there.
