Friday Five 6.7.2019

The weather is going to be absolutely GORGEOUS this weekend, but if you feel the need to binge on TV this weekend (or even next week), here’s a Friday Five with some great TV!

Luther is BACK on BBC America and I continue to be completely obsessed with this show. Why?

I will take ANY excuse to post a shirtless pic of Idris Elba. NOT SORRY.

I will take ANY excuse to post a shirtless pic of Idris Elba. NOT SORRY.

But seriously, this is one of the best written TV shows, and Idris Elba is absolutely amazing in it. The lead character Luther is a cop, but he’s not an entirely good cop. The shade of grey make this show more interesting than any cop show written and it’s definitely worth a watch. The most recent season airs every Sunday on BBC America, but you can catch up on past seasons on Netflix.

Another BBC America show, Killing Eve, is in Season 2. This show tells the story about a female detective pursuing a female serial killer and they both get obsessed with each other. If you love strong, smart, female characters AND great fashion, you need to watch this show. Season 2 on BBC America, but you can watch Season 1 on Hulu.

When They See Us: Directed by Ava DuVernay, this show tells the story of the 5 teenagers who were accused of being the Central Park rapists, despite the very thin (non-existent) evidence in the case. All 5 served time for a crime they did not commit. This story is beautifully acted and created, and is a must watch. But be warned, you may find yourself crying or enraged by the series. It’s a short series, just 4 episodes of 100% compelling TV.

Always Be my Maybe: This is a fun/cute romantic comedy featuring nerd rap, Keanu Reeves and a sweet love story. Growing up in India I had no shortage of seeing Asian people reflected in romantic comedies (Thank you Bollywood) but if you grew up here without that experience, you might particularly enjoy it. Either way, representation is important, and it’s nice to see that Netflix is really bringing it each summer with the romcom genre. Also, the soundtrack of this movie is amazing.

And finally, if you’re just in the mood for something soothing, beautiful and inspiring, Volume 6 of Chef’s Table definitely fits the bill. It takes you all over the world via your stomach.

If you do plan to get outside this weekend in Greater Cleveland, here’s a helpful list of things to watch out for.
