Friday Five 2.14.2020: The Cookbook Edition

While I’m not the biggest fan of winter, I do attempt to embrace hygge by being cozy. One of my favorite cozy practices is cooking, and winter tends to be my favorite time to try out new recipes. Today I’m sharing 5 cookbooks that are in heavy rotation this winter!

I first discovered Alison Roman via her NYTimes Cooking column, and knew her recipes were delicious. And then I borrowed her cookbook from the library and loved it SO MUCH that I had to order it for myself. This book is perfect for low key get-togethers.

I’m never homesick for Bombay (Mumbai) - I’ve been here longer than I lived there, but reading this book made me very very homesick. Yes, it’s a cookbook with some of the best Bombay recipes, but it’s so much more than that. It’s a love letter to an amazing city and that comes through so vividly in this book. If you’ve ever been to Bombay and then read this book, you will know what I mean. Don’t skip the recipes — they are excellent.

Nick and I have been trying to add more vegetables to our plate (and move meat as a side) and this book has been our guide in trying new things. I’m good at making Indian vegetables, but if it’s not Indian style veggies, I run out of ideas - this book helps prevent that.

The Dude DIet has been in our meal rotation for several years now, especially when we’re craving comfort food. There’s an outstanding chicken shwarma recipe in here and we’re also big fans of the Shepherd’s pie and peanut noodles.

Sometimes it’s really nice to go back to basics, and Small Victories is so simple and so delicious. Everything is unfussy and uncomplicated, and that’s the beauty of this cookbook. It’s incredibly accessible, and each recipe has plenty of substitutions so you can either adapt to what you have on hand, or remake variations so it feels like a change-up (but it isn’t really).

A quick heads up for my Cleveland-area readers. Julia Turshen is doing a cookbook signing on March 26th at SLFMKR in Ohio City. A signed cookbook (which you can buy with your ticket) would be a really nice Mother’s Day gift. GET TICKETS TO JULIA TURSHEN’S BOOK SIGNING!
