Friday Five 6.19.2020: Books & Podcasts

Wow, it’s been two weeks since I’ve done one of these and it feels like forever! Today I’m going back to one of my favorite topics: podcasts! And combining it with another favorite topic: books!

So these are podcasts about books!! Although not always specifically about books. Let’s get to it.

  1. The Book Riot Podcast: This is a weekly podcast about books and the world of books. I’m new to this podcast, and listened to a recent episode on the publishing industry. I didn’t know a whole lot about how the industry works and it was so interesting to hear that the industry is systemically built to favor people from wealthy families, specifically wealthy, white families. It also talked about JK Rowling’s disgusting transphobia, and overall, was a really educational experience.

  2. Nerdette: This podcast is presented by WBEZ Chicago, and while there are a LOT of book-related episodes, it’s also not just about books. This is another podcast that is newer to me, and recent episodes included an interview with Brit Bennett, author of The Vanishing Half (it’s on my TBR pile), and an episode on plants.

  3. The Stacks: The Stacks podcast is specifically about books and authors, and is one of the few literary podcasts hosted by a Black woman, Traci Thomas. This is another new-to-me podcast, and I loved her recent interview with author Bakari Seller about his new memoir My Vanishing Country. This podcast mentions a lot of books weekly, and luckily the website (click on the pink title link) has them all listed so you don’t have to worry about missing a name if you’re multi-tasking.

  4. Sarah’s Bookshelves: Like The Stacks, Sarah’s bookshelves also shares lots of books in each episode, that is recapped in each episode’s show notes. She interviews book editors and average people who love to read and everyone in between. Her website has extensive book lists too so you should definitely go there too.

  5. The High Low: I’m a well-documented Anglophile, and The High Low comes from England, via a recommendation from my dear friend Jenn Day who introduced me to it some years ago. The hosts Dolly Alderton and Pandora Sykes are both authors and like to read, and share books as well as beautifully written journalism pieces, balancing them with some truly ridiculous news.

Bonus: I’ve blogged about another favorite bookish podcast Bad on Paper several times, which is why I’m not including it on the official Friday Five list. Hosts Becca Freeman and Grace Atwood read a lot, and one episode a month is a complete book review (which also includes spoilers) but they also talk about all kinds of interesting things and interview interesting people.

If you like books, you may like my monthly book reviews as well as this post on How I find the many books I read.
