Pandemic Activities: You can still do stuff safely!

Things have started to open up since the lockdown started in March, but to be honest, I’m still very cautious about where I go. I’ve been walking the dogs every day, maskless - trust me, no one is getting within 10 feet of me (let alone 6) with our dogs. We’ve been to 4 restaurants (3 were outdoors), but even then, I’m not entirely comfortable - it really depends on the location. There are just too many people who are walking around like we’re not still fighting a pandemic.

I’m 100% not comfortable being indoors at a restaurant, and definitely not at any indoor fitness space. That said, I participated in two outdoor fitness activities this past weekend and wanted to talk more about them!

Friday evening, Nick and I scheduled a couple of kayak rentals with 41N Kayaks. Due to the pandemic 41N Kayaks and paddleboards are only available via pre-rental, so that the kayaks and boards and all the related equipment can be cleaned and sanitized appropriately. Masks are required at check-in and check-out but obviously you can remove your masks while you’re in your own kayak on the water. Most people rent their kayaks for 90 minutes, but we picked an hour, and because the waves on the lake were so high, we lucked out with the time allocation. That said, if the lake had been calm, the extra half hour would have been much desired.

We’ve been kayaking several times before so we didn’t need lessons, but they are available if you need them. There was a group of 10 women who were on a girls activity learning to paddleboard - such a great way to spend some socially distant time together!

The waves were super crazy, but in calmer conditions, you can go all the way out on the lake.

The next morning I made my way to my friend Alicia’s yoga class that she hosts every Saturday, outdoors at the Lakewood Truck Park. Again, masks are required before and after, but not on the mat. There’s plenty of room to spread out, so I was way further than 6 ft apart from anyone else. Also, because of my polymorphic light eruption (PLME) and sensitivity to the sun, I was happily in the shade. I’m not comfortable being in an indoor studio, but I miss group classes, so this is the perfect compromise. Did I mention your ticket includes a mimosa after?

It won’t be warm and gorgeous forever, but we still have a few good months of outdoorsy activity to take advantage of, so I hope you’re taking that opportunity, wherever you are!
