Friday Five 3.11.2021: 5 movies I've watched lately

If you read my post from earlier this week then you know that I haven’t been reading as much as I did last year. Instead, I’ve been watching movies! Nick and I do dinner and a movie (at home obviously) every Friday & Saturday night, and over the last few weeks we’ve caught up on a few new releases!

Here are 5 I recommend:

  1. If you’re only going to watch ONE movie, make it Judas & the Black Messiah. This movie tells the story of Fred Hampton, the chairman of the Black Panther Party in Illinois in the 1960s. Compelling storytelling, a wildly talented cast, and beautiful 60s costumes. Bonus: it was filmed in Cleveland. employing lots of Clevelanders for the cast (extras) and crew!

  2. Coming 2 America is the sequel to the original Coming To America, reworked for 2021. If you’re ready to dive into some nostaliga, this is the right fit. I loved the throwbacks - this is straight up fun!

  3. To All the Boys P.S. I Still Love You: If you’ve been following the story of Lara Jean Covey and Peter Kavinsky, you’ve hopefully caught up. But in the event you haven’t, the To All The Boys Trillogy is an excellent way to spend a few hours (personally part 2 is the weakest). This is not NIck’s genre of movie but he happened to be around while I was watching and his comment was “these people seem believable” which is high praise for a YA romcom from him.

  4. One Night in Miami: This is a very dialogue-heavy movie that is the story of a fictional meeting between Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown (yes, THE Jim Brown of the Cleveland Browns), and Sam Cooke. The movie won Top 10 American Film of the Year by the American Film Institute so you know it’s good. I will not be surprised if it’s nominated for an Oscar.

  5. Booksmart: This is the story of two high school seniors who have done everything by the book to set themselves up to get into the colleges of their dreams. On the eve of graduation, they realize that their classmates have also gotten into dream colleges, all while having a lot of fun along the way. This kicks of one crazy day where the two friends try to make the most of what’s left of their highschool experience. It’s a little like the female version of Superbad. Full disclosure, Nick did not like this movie.

Grab your popcorn and let me know what you watch this weekend!!
