Styling Outdoor Planters for Halloween

Look, for the most part, I’m not one for styling planters. My backyard planters are pretty basic with flowers growing from tubers. But this summer, we updated our front porch, and got new planters, and now styling planters is something I do each season.

To be honest, this is largely inspired by our wonderful neighbors (and friends) who have been killing it with the planter styling each season for 9 years. I have planter envy every time I look at Kevin’s planters because he has such an eye for making them so gorgeous and swoon-worthy. And until my friend Alexa let me in on the secret, I didn’t know there was a trick to styling entryway planters.

This is Kevin’s planter situation. You can see why I have planter-envy.

Are you ready for the secret?

Thriller, Filler and Spiller.

Thriller: This is the big attention-seeking plant that draws eyes in. It’s usually either tall or has a vibrant color, or both. Hibiscus, grasses, think big and bold.

Filler: This is the bulk of the planter for foliage and maybe a little color. This is a great way to incorporate annuals like begonias or pansy or even mums in the fall.

Spiller: This is something that falls out of the planter - think fuchsia or sweet potato vines or creeping zinnias.

Since I didn’t know this principle for styling planters when I first received ours earlier this summer, I decided to incorporate it into my fall planter update.

Obviously these plants still need to grow over the next month to get lush and gorgeous, but I love the look especially because it incorporates Halloween too! The best part of this little makeover is that it cost me about $40 total, including the plants. The skull and the fabric are from Target, and the plants are from my local plant store, Buyer’s Outlet.

Have you put out your fall decorations yet? Are you Team Skulls, Team Pumpkins, or a little bit of both?

P.S: You can find my planters here, they also come in black. Kevin’s urns came from a garden store, but if you want to replicate that look indoors, or at a smaller scale, check out these planters.
